Mentorship Session Diaries: The Power of Communication

Communication is something we do every day, often without even thinking about it. But effective communication requires intention and attention. It is not only about what we say, but how we listen, how we connect, and how willing we are to use our voice.

Our second PinballBURSARY mentorship session focused on "Effective Communication" and the role it plays in how we show up at school, in our relationships, and throughout life.

Students reflected on some of the small steps they had taken since our previous session: introducing themselves to professors, speaking up in class, and putting themselves out there to make new connections. For one student, a simple conversation with her professor was enough to reduce anxiety, build a stronger relationship, and make her feel more comfortable about participating in class.

But starting those conversations is not always easy.

When asked what can hold us back from connecting with someone new, students shared things like overthinking, shyness, anxiety, fear of judgment, and fear of rejection. The reminder was simple: "Sometimes you have to take the step even when you are nervous."

Effective communication also means being intentional about understanding others. Everyone communicates differently, and meaningful connections are built when we take the time to listen, ask questions, and meet people where they are.

Perhaps one of the strongest reminders from the session was that communication begins internally. As Sherri, Strategy and Business Development Director for One Voice One Team shared, “You are who you think you are.” How we speak to ourselves can shape the confidence we bring into every other conversation.

So, speak up. Ask the question. Introduce yourself. Listen with intention.

Sometimes, one conversation can change more than you think.
