Mentorship Session Diaries: I Almost Gave Up

Written By: Paul VanderGriendt, Event Management Coordinator Mentorship Session Diary. Entry 26

Setting goals and striving to achieve them is how we can give ourselves direction and purpose in our lives. When we know where we want to go, it becomes easier to make a plan and gradually work towards becoming who we want to be. Commitment to the goal and maintaining motivation can be of the hard part. Not just having a main goal, but knowing the “why” of our goal and having a strong reason will help reinforce our perseverance and commitment.

By continuing to focus on our “why” and always reminding ourselves of the importance of achieving what we want, we can keep ourselves on track. As time goes on, priorities and aspects of our life will continue to change. When we stay true to our “why,” we are able to re-energize our mindset and adapt our path towards achieving the goals we set for ourselves. Adapting and losing our direction are not the same thing. If we know what we want our final destination to be, being flexible while making good decisions can allow us to navigate different paths in order to get there. It is important to remember that everything we want cannot happen all at once. Taking small steps, maintaining consistency over time and celebrating our achievements will be building blocks in making us who we are.

Having the right perspective can change everything. Exercising discipline isn’t just about working out, achieving good grades or getting the job we want. All of these things collectively build our quality of life, the health of our relationships and our mental well-being. When we think about each of our decisions as having broader implications on our life overall, we can better understand them and how they affect our “why” in life. Envisioning where we see ourselves in the future can help us be more intentional about the steps we take and the decisions we make to turn our vision into a reality.
